Green Topping

Here is a green roof that both you and your dog can enjoy.  I ran across this little gem in the demonstration garden at Gulf Coast Research and Education Center’s Plant City campus.  The mix of succulents and cacti makes a stunning display while insulating Fido’s abode from the heat and cold.

The plants are set in shallow compartmented trays from the home improvement store, using a light, well-drained potting mix, and set atop the slightly pitched roof.  Horticulturist Sydney Park Brown told me that the succulents do better with a bit of shade rather than direct sun, ideal for a backyard that receives bright but dappled light.

Another advantage I see is being able to work your garden without any bending or stooping…a good thing for us old dogs!
